How to Figure Out Your Child's Learning Style

September 27, 2021

You may think that school, no matter the grade level, can empower students from various walks of life to learn at their own pace. However, this general misconception has caused many to miss golden opportunities during further education and work simply because of a lack of insight into different learning styles.

Your children and others may currently be suffering from this reality. Thankfully, as the parent or guardian, you have the power to overcome this together. Use this article as your guide to finding out what you need to know and how you can help your kids and even yourself in the process:

What Is a Learning Style and What Are the Different Types?

Learning style pertains to the way an individual would prefer to absorb, analyse, and retain information. For instance, if your kid undergoes physics tutoring, they may want to process facts through experiments rather than simply imaginative means while reading a textbook.

This vital factor in education applies to various subject matters. While it is generally used in a classroom setting, you can see this utilised among on-the-job training, career enhancement courses, and the like. In general, you can often notice the following two main learning style models preferred as general references:

  1. The VARK Model

The term VARK in the VARK model stands for Visual, Auditory, Reading (or writing), and Kinesthetic, which refers to people that learn best by seeing, hearing, reading (or writing), and moving around, respectively. To read more, check out our article on these learning styles.

The VARK model is a great way to comprehend your needs as a learner. In other words, it’s a way to think about how your thought process goes and what is the most proficient way for you to perform at your best.

With that being said, since the mind is complex, you and your kids may likely have two or more preferred learning styles working together to have a more comprehensive way to digest information and put it into practice. Thus, it’s important not to get caught up in the labels and explore them through various learning opportunities, whether in or out of school.

  1. Memletics

Memletics is much like the VARK model since it also recognises visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning as valid areas for students. However, the difference lies in its categorisation as it labels learners as either verbal, logical, social, and solitary. It means learners would process information better through speaking, logical reasoning, social interaction, and independent learning, respectively. Like the VARK model, there’s also room for overlapping of different learning styles.

The main goal of memletics is to allow students of different backgrounds to be more empowered as learners to discover what works best for them. It also doesn’t box individuals into stereotypical fields simply because they prefer to understand things best through other means.

For example, you may think that your children can be future engineers because of their inclinations towards logical reasoning and interpersonal skills. But through the memletics model, they can also be verbal and solitary learners yet pursue engineering. It all boils down to what their needs are as students.

How Can I Determine Which Learning Style Is Best for My Children?

Consider the following tips for your guidance:

  1. Encourage your children to express themselves through learning by being open about their needs and preferences.
  2. Talk with teachers and tutors about your child's receptiveness to various learning methods.

Knowing about different learning styles is important to help your children can succeed in their studies and future career development. By understanding the way they receive information and solve problems, we can better engage them with learning.
